Middle-school tackle teams prep for season with strong performances against Greenwich

The Pelham Rugby tackle teams played their first pre-season matches April 1, and they did not play the fools.

Pelham’s sixth grade team, in their first pre-season game, met a Greenwich team that had already played twice. Pelham lost 4 tries to 0, but had some fantastic stretches of play.

“This was our first game and it showed,” said Coach Matt Persanis. “These kids are going to get better fast.”

Playing in the game were Cameron Ward, Adam Razick, Duffy Doyle, Sophia Imperato, Jack Fronce, Woods Johnson, Conner McNulty, Aiden Sisk, James Bristow, Quinn Jenkins and Jean Vigroux.

Pelham’s seventh-eighth grade team blew out Greenwich 17 tries to 1. It was nothing short of a commanding performance, as Pelham dominated all phases of play from start to finish. Playing for Pelham were Dan Biskup, Matt Biskup, Luke Persanis, Cian Burns, James Cahill, Morgan Collins, Kees Huisman, Whit Johnson, Joe Lieberman, Nick Roll, Xavier Worsely, North Westall and Quinn Scanlon.

The Pelham Youth Rugby Club is coached by Matt Persanis (mp@elefantepersanis.com), Jamie McClellen, Alex Willen and Spencer Scanlon. Youth rugby is a Pelham Recreation sport and all players of any level are invited  to join. Pelham Rugby also runs a flag version of the game for elementary and middle-school age kids. There is still time to join both tackle and flag. Visit the Pelham Rec website to download the form.
